One Video Source for Multi-Floor Digital Signage in a Department Store
Department stores use digital signage across multiple floors for brand campaigns, promotions, and event information. When the same content needs to reach displays in different areas, both transmission distance and cable routing become part of the system design.
This department store, operated by a well-known Asian retail chain, has five floors and around 10 displays at the main entrance and in merchandise, checkout, and dining areas. A centralized video source distributes campaign content throughout the store.
The project uses the HE03L-4K chainable HDMI extender, which pairs an HE03T-4K transmitter with HE03LR-4K chainable receivers. Each system uses one transmitter and 8 to 12 receivers. The final display uses an HE03R-4K receiver because no further extension is needed. More than 1,000 systems based on this architecture have been deployed.
Reducing Repeated Cable Runs Across Multiple Floors
With displays spread across multiple floors, the project needed a distribution layout that could reach each display area without requiring a separate long cable run back to the source for each display.
For this multi-floor layout, direct source-to-display runs would require a separate signal path from the source to each display, with each run limited to less than 100 m. Using three display locations as a simplified example:
Video Source → Display A
Video Source → Display B
Video Source → Display C
With the daisy-chain layout used in this project, the signal continues from one display location to the next. HE03L-4K supports up to 250 displays over a total distance of up to 2.5 km:
Video Source → Display Area A → Display Area B → Display Area C → Display Area on Another Floor
This lets the cabling follow the display layout and continue across floors without requiring every display location to run a separate path back to the source.
Adding Display Locations Along the Daisy Chain
At each point where the chain continues, the HE03LR-4K outputs video to the local display while forwarding the signal to downstream receivers. Its two RJ45 outputs can also connect additional receivers, allowing the signal path to extend into another display area when needed.
Each link can extend the video signal up to 140 m, depending on the cable used. By continuing the chain from one HE03LR-4K to the next, the signal path can extend farther from the source and reach display locations on other floors.
Low-Latency Playback and Image Detail Across Multiple Displays
When the same promotional content appears on multiple nearby displays, differences in playback timing are easier to notice. Image detail also matters for product visuals, brand graphics, and promotional video.
HE03L-4K supports resolutions up to 4K@30Hz and uses SwiftSync technology. SC&T measured video distribution latency at 8 ms, below 1/60 of a second. SC&T also tested playback across nine daisy-chained displays. In the test video, the on-screen timers show no visible difference in playback timing.
Centralized Content Updates and Future Display Additions
Campaign and promotional content can be updated once at the source and distributed along the daisy chain, without separate media players or individual updates at each display.
For future brand areas or promotional displays, new display locations can be added without running a separate long cable back to the source. More than 1,000 systems have been deployed using the same architecture, demonstrating stable operation at scale.
